How to remove the “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete” message from WordPress

I recently updated the WordPress-powered site at www.intercambioclimatico.com and used the built-in Worpdress upgrade system to carry out the task. This returned an error (I think it was to do with deleting or copying old files or something), and so I went to the root of the problem and upgraded the site manually by ftp’ing the newer WordPress core files straight to the server.

This all went swimmingly and the site was back up in minutes (the “this site is down for maintenance” message was making me sweat!), although I was left with one problem, a rather nasty message at the top of the screen:


Eugh! If you get the same problem, just do the following:

remove the .maintenance file from the root of your WordPress installation

It’s that simples! No maintenance file ~ no shonky error message.
